Away from home

Iran

In university dormitories of Iran, students are assigned to gender, faculty, education level and age. These dormitories have always been high sensitive places supervised and controlled, with even more sensitivity around girl’s dormitories. Therefore, the lives of the girls in these places always go on behind fences and windows; the opaqueness makes this space even vaguer, the predefined structure of the dormitory make easier to pigeonhole everyone. In these spatial conditions where emotional and psychological intimacy is rendered colorless, residents are driven to loneliness and isolation in spite of living in group. But regardless of all these emotions and conditions, the lives of these girls are ongoing within these limitations. The photos of this series were taken during three months in a girls’ dormitory in Tehran when I was myself living there.
