Shanghai Sacred

United Kingdom

China is seen to be going through one of the great religious revivals of our time. Hundreds of millions of Chinese are disturbed by the pace of advancement in their country and are now turning to faith for the meaning and hope they don't find in the radically secular world around them. This search for the sacred is shifting the social structures and shaping the landscape of China’s future. Shanghai Sacred explores the spaces, rituals, daily practices and communities that weave the spiritual fabric of the China’s largest city, home to 24 million inhabitants. Intimate photographs document the creativity of the faithful and its impact on landscape, when creating ‘sacred space’ in a dense and restless urban environment.
